Talking to Elle

Elle and I were having a phone conversation and she asked, "How much of what we talk about do you think to yourself... whoa.... I should blog that."

And I confess.... if I could live blog one of our phone conversations I would.

We are frickin' hilarious.

But usually by the time I get off the phone I can't remember what we talked about.  At all.

This conversation included me telling a story about some teenaged chipmunks playing chicken.... which... if I can remember it.... I will tell you later.  Truly a redneck story.

And the universal mommy lament about time, effort, reward and busy-ness.

And money.  We often talk about money.  Which is a little odd because we are in very different places money-wise but we still have the same problems.

And meal planning.  And vet bills.  And family.  And being married to men who don't like chicken.

And see... I can't even remember what we were talking about that had me laughing so hard the ear tooth fell in the grass.

Sunday Morning at my house.

Wake up with big plans to tidy the whole house and then work on the living room.  After several months of it being in a total state of flux I'm ready to finish the last bits of floor painting, make it cute with a fantastic floor arrangement and think about buying a new rug.

Make coffee.
Clean up dining room.
Clean up kitchen.
Put kids to work on crafts in dining room.
Start pulling paint tape in living room.
Take a break and make pancakes for breakfast.
Kids eat ALL pancakes.
Go back to pull more tape.
Turn around and realize the dining room AND kitchen are, once again, a complete disaster.

Wonder why I don't ever get anything done.

Random Responses

In response to this post from Elle.

1.  Bandaids and such.  You can condense all those boxes of 25 down into about 4 boxes if you don't mind mix-n-match bandaid grabs.  That's my only tip.  Oh.  And it makes me think how EXPENSIVE hoarding must be....  If $1722 fits in a mid-sized box.... how much money is in a hoarded house?  Hmmm.

2.  We aren't in the Survivor habit because we didn't have that channel for several years.  Now we have the channel but hardly ever watch it.  Something else must be on in that time slot that we watch... I wonder what it is.

3.  The Bachelor makes my teeth hurt.

4.  2011 wasn't the greatest year around here.  Maybe a nice review would help.

5.  I did some goals.  I enjoy hearing your health goals, triumphs and setbacks.

6.  Yes, more organizing please.  I'm in the throes right now.... as usual.

7.  I reinvent and rededicate myself to the meal planning goal on a weekly basis.  Sigh.

8.  I figure if I let it be in their closet then they have the right to wear it.  On that note... several pairs of ratty leggings went OUT of Bugsy's drawer this weekend.  Tuff likes to wear yoga pants and a long-sleeved shirt under a cute graphic t-shirt with knee high socks.  That's her mo.  Sometimes jeans.  And we cut her hair off so she can wear it up or down now.... no more ratty stocking cap pony tails.

9.  I haven't gotten my rewards certificate.  I hope I didn't toss it.  I'm on budget for groceries so far this month.

10.  I'm looking to replace our impossible-to-clean George with a more all purpose thing with removable plates..... My cousin has one she got at Costco but it must be seasonal.... she even had a coupon for it.  So I'm watching...  My mom has a panini press and it is AWESOME.  Grab some bread, slice up some nice veggies, toss on some cheese and squeeze away.  Yum.  The way I do it now involves an electric frying pan (because our stove top cooks too hot) and a cast iron skillet to press it.  Not so easy or pretty and time consuming when the 7-year-old eats the sammies faster than I can cook them and need at least 3.

Wildland Fire Number 3, Week 1, 2012

First was a fire at Dearborn due to a welder spark.

Then a transient campfire out-of-control on Mount Helena.  (There were actually several fire calls but only one graduated from city fire to wild land.)

That was yesterday.  Hot got home late and we had dinner.  Then he got called again to go to Browning for the series of fires there.  WTF?  It rain/slushed on them this morning so maybe he will come home tonight.

Nothing like packing long johns to go fight fire.

Ok Mother Nature.  Enough.  Seriously.

Electronic Devices

Son came home from a field trip today and complained because everyone else brought a hand-held game for the 2+ hour bus ride and all he had was a book.  "A paper book, mom."

I have no answer.  I wasn't about to send my $300 ipod with a 7-year-old.

I told him to look out the window.

It was the right thing to say.

There should be an app for that....

I confess to not having a smart phone.  I would love one in theory but, frankly, I can't justify the expense.... especially when I don't have cell service in my house.

But I do have an ipod touch.  And I love it.

So.... what apps do you love?

I've been randomly downloading free stuff and now I have the kids sorting the games they like as-is, don't like or think we should buy the full version of.....

I actually enjoy reading bits and pieces on it (The Art of War, Winnie the Poo) when I'm waiting for things.  (kid pick up, doctor's office)  And you already know I have the pinterest app on it.

The kids will be getting some itunes gift cards to buy things they want... but they don't know what they want.

So tell me what we can't live without.

They Caught the Bad Guy

Oh.  I'm glad they got this guy.  They had some warnings out about him.  Last time there was a big man hunt the guy was hiding out in my boss's flower bed.  Seriously.  In her back yard.  He tried to hijack her neighbor.

Saturday's Struggle

I'm struggling here.

It's a lovely Saturday and I have big plans for cleaning and organizing and I can't get off the couch.  My head aches and I have chills and a bad case of laziness.

The kids and I got flu shots yesterday.  I swear... they make me sick.  I'm on the second pot of coffee so things should start looking up soon but....  Bugsy has a fever and that random glassy-eyed look.  Sweet is gimping and limping because he got his shot in the leg.  Tuff woke me up at 5:30 this morning with a stomach ache.

So we are watching a fairy movie in our jammies and folding laundry.... I'm still catching up from not having laundry detergent for 4 days.  Lunch will be snack foods and if we feel betterlater we will get cleaned up.  If all goes as planned, we are heading to a fund raiser tonight.

Bug didn't have a daycare provider yesterday so I took the day off.  We dropped the bigs at school and hit Target.  Didn't find a damn thing on my list except some kid shampoo.  Then to Shopko to try to find a couch slipcover.... Shopko doesn't open until 9.  So we walked over to Albertson's and picked up a few groceries to kill time.  We got absolutely nothing at Shopko OR at Joanne's.  Joanne's kind of depresses me these days..... I can't keep my kitchen floor clean... why would I need another freakin' project or craft to do???  It STILL wasn't 10:00 (The real goal was Costco for laundry detergent and supplies.  Also *rant* I went three weeks without going to Costco and all that happened was we ran out of milk and I spent $300 this time instead of my usual $200) so we stopped at Lowe's.  Big Mistake.  I didn't buy anything but came home with a stack of smartstrand samples.  It has a lifetime warrenty for pet urine.  Can this possibly be true?  The online reviews are promising.

That brings up color.  Hot is a big fan of "frieze" style carpeting.... although he doesn't know what that means.  I don't like carpet as a rule so I'm ok with frieze.... it is soft and furry and will hide a lot of sins (and a lot of lego and barbie shoes).  As to color.... Hot is color blind.  He's voting neutral beige and not too dark.  But I could put in peacock blue and he wouldn't be able to be sure it wasn't beige.  I like Gwinnett Cool Cactus and Gwinnett Diamondback.  Slightly darker than apartment beige but not chocolate-y dark.

So that's the current carpet saga.  Now we are battling about which rooms to do.  He thinks we should just do the living room and stairs.... I think the install cost is $100 for the whole house so why not do the upstairs bedrooms at the same time.  Peach.  Do I need to say it again?  Peach.  And, also, stinky.  Odd... old lady smell.  His reasoning.... how do we do it and move the furniture around?  My answer.... I already asked.  We cram the furniture in one bedroom while they carpet the other.  Then they move to the stairs while we shuffle the furniture from the uncarpeted bedroom into the one that is done.  Ta-fuckin-da.

Watch and see.  Nothing will happen.  We won't do a damn thing.  Sigh.

Little Things of Note

My lovely basil crop froze.  Bummer.  Happens most every year.

I saw a guy walking a wheel barrow today.  He was crossing the street.  No apparent reason for the wheel barrow.

My son has outgrown all of his shorts.  All.  Of.  Them.  And, in spite of the freezing temps at night, it appears summer isn't quite gone.  He came out dressed like a hobo this am.  So we are off to find a few pairs of shorts and a new hoodie sweatshirt.  I miss hand-me-downs.

I'm making a list of ailments to talk to the doctor about... the list is really long.  Geez.

O. M. G.

It is COLD here today.

It was lovely yesterday.... mid-70's and a bit cloudy with just a hint of breeze.  My kind of weather.

Today is rainy and cold.  Like.... wear a sweater and turn the heater on at work.  It stormed last night.  I happened to be up so I sat on the porch and watched the show.  Lovely.  We had over an inch of rain at 6:30am.... that's a qualified inch.... the rain gauge was under the edge of the porch for part of the storm so we probably got more.

The entire state is in a state of emergency due to flooding.  I wouldn't be surprised if my in-law's road washes out.  The water in the creek was within inches of the top of the culvert this morning.

I love rain but this is getting a bit silly.

I love wireless

I freakin' pink puffy heart wireless internet IN MY HOUSE.  Yes.

It was and is a redneck situation.  Picture 125 feet of data cord running across my lawn and down my fence with a radar gun looking thing perched on a fence post.  Yes.

I don't care.  It goes well with the rabbit ears shoved out the living room window.

Hell Froze Over.... Here's your invitation to the skating party...

Glad to see the rest of the country is having the same frigid temps we are....  although today is a balmy 24 degrees.

I've been wearing Sweet's fleece hat to work.... it is black and has skulls on it.  Paired with my sleek black sunglasses.... I look cool.... in my mini van.

Me tossa

You would think, what with all the simplifying I talk about, I would have clean cupboards... right?  After finding a bottle of bactin that expired in 1999 last week I decided I better pay more attention.  (Not to be topped.... my dad gave me a bottle of cat wormer that expired in 1987.)

Last night I went on a little cleaning kicker in the kitchen.

Bag of barley for making soup mixes (from, um, 7 years ago?)  GONE
Whole wheat flour.  GONE (I've heard it doesn't last long and this was a "spare" bag lost in the bottom and back of the lazy susan.)
Spices.  GONE.
Old tea.  GONE.
Dried out marshmallows.  GONE.
Random small packaged foods in the snack bin.  EATEN.
Fancy cocoa mix.  EATEN.
Dry beans.  REORGANIZED.... I'm getting more this weekend.

Found:  THREE jars of celery salt.  Apparently EVERY TIME I make a bloody mary I buy a new jar?
Found:  Two boxes of really good tea I bought a few weeks ago.  Yum.
Found:  Silver cupcake cups I was looking for last month.
Found:  Toothpicks.  I thought we were out.
Found:  Babyfood grinder.... she's pretty much done with it now... do I hang on just in case for another month or two or do I put it in the "give to my brother" box??

Ok... I have to talk more about the spices.  I had them all out on my counter and my mil shows up.  She's a real cook and loves spices.  Every packet or jar I would hold up she'd say, "Oh, yeah-yeah... that's good.  Keep that one.  You just put a litte shake in....."  Like I’m ever going to make sugar cookies, pumpkin pie, stew, curry or saffron rice. We were dying laughing.

Also.... I have lots of tiny tabasco bottles... any crafty ideas?  Maybe I'll tie them on bags of beans for gifts or something..... they came with MRE's.

So far the only things I’m keeping are: celery salt for bloody caesar’s, garlic powder for noodles ala Daddy, garlic salt for toast, cinnamon for toast, cumin & white pepper for white bean chili, popcorn seasoning….. anything else I need?  I'll probably re-invest in some "fall" spices (allspice, ginger....) when pumpkin muffin season comes around.  But I prefer to buy in tiny quantities at the health food store.... way cheaper and fresher.

I also kept some fresh saffron and herbes de provence (sp?) that I just got as gifts from some travelers.  Maybe I WILL make saffron rice.

Some of the containers were from King Soopers..... so that makes them almost 20 years old.  I think I can let them go.

What spices do you use on a regular basis?  What spices are lurking that are over a year old?  What about 10 years old?

If I use the finest drill bit can I just drill holes in my face like Donald Duck??

So I had sinus surgery (and my tonsils removed) in the fall of 2008.  I had been having chronic sinus infections since I was a teen.  (Originally blamed on allergies to pine.... which I've been tested for... I'm not allergic to pine.)

The summer of 2009 I was worried the sinus thing hadn't worked because I was getting headaches and odd feelings in my head.  Turns out it happened every time I got in the car.  The car with air conditioning.  I was, essentially, giving myself an ice cream headache by running cold air over sinuses that hadn't seen air flow in about 20 years.  The doc had warned me it would take about 18 months for them to heal.

Fast-forward to a few weeks ago.  I felt kinda bad but not terrible.  I was having some headaches but didn't think much about it.  I spent so many years just living with daily headaches that it didn't occur to me that it wasn't normal.

Then I stopped and listened to my body.

And I realized I had a sinus infection.  So I got a z-pac.  I felt better for a few days.  Then I felt worse... much worse.  So now I'm on another round of drugs, fingers crossed, hoping to feel better in a few days.

I'm so proud of myself for not just soldiering through.  I'm so proud of myself for going to the doctor.  It's a tiny victory to actually do something for myself.

I'm so pleased with this little bit of self-help momentum.... I'm seriously considering scheduling myself for a haircut... wouldn't that be the ultimate in self-care luxury????

Bah-humbug Already

I have decided to give up on Christmas for a few days. I'm just not into it so I'm taking a break.

A break from... what? I haven't really done anything anyway. And I haven't been very gung-ho to shop.... shopping means spending money and I just can't do it right now. It hurts me.... physically and deeply.

I'm done shopping for some and have ideas for others and my motivation is GONE. So I'll sit back and have a cup of tea and wait for inspiration.

I got my lot of holiday books from ebay ($17 shipped for 10 books) and they are lovely. I am going to wrap them (maybe tonight) and put them in a wicker basket along with wrapping a bunch of winter-themed ones we already have around and the kids can open 2 per night for the 12 days of Christmas and we will read them. I can't wait to read "Stranger in the Woods" and "Tacky the Penguin" again.

The Longest Mile

Here's what you forget about the end of pregnancy...

.... You can't call anyone. Every phone call I make these days is answered with a breathless, "Hello... are you at the hospital?"

Um, no.

People I have a whole 'nother WEEK until my due date. At least. I'm not one of you early-Bessies. I go late. Days late. So chill out. (Watch me hatch tonight....)

In other news... I feel good. Way good. Too good. Not normal. No swelling, no puffiness, no weight gain (wait... should I be worried about that?), no major pains (although I am getting that "baby is low" strange nerve stuff once in a while). My back doesn't even hurt (although I feel I paid my dues in hip pain from the ankle sprain in February that lasted for months....) I have ankles. I have some strange brown freckles on my face but no real "mask" at this point. I'm still wearing my wedding ring (ok, yes, the larger band and not the rock but still....) I'm having contractions regularly but no regular contractions.... does that make sense? Doctor appt this afternoon. I'll keep you posted.

Exam T minus 2+ weeks

You have got to go read Dooce. She's pregnant and due, um, any day now. Read the post when she talks about getting an internal exam.... I'm SO GLAD my experience is not her experience..... it hurt her. Now, I'm not saying it was a cake walk, but, seriously.... it takes about a minute and, well, he does use lube, right?

And then she says "the last 3 times she examed me" or something like that... and I go, "WHAT?" And then I go, "WHY????" Why all the coochie-looking? What does it tell you? Nothing. So why do it?

Internets, today was my first internal exam. (Ok, wait, yes... I had an exam at 27 weeks when I was contracting to get a "cervical baseline" in case it happened again... I also got an ultrasound then.) I am due in, what, 15-17 days? The only reason he did the exam was he had to do the strep b test so while he was down there he thought he'd root around a little more. I'm at 3cm. But I could have told you that.... the baby has dropped. I'm not at a waddle but I'm definitely at that place where when I try to stand up I can't lean forward in my chair if my knees are together... know what I mean?

Thank goodness I'm easy....... hee-hee.
